Alabama Paycheck Calculator

Estimate pay before Alabama state and local withholding, then enter the amount from current official state guidance.
Alabama state withholding is not calculated automatically. Enter the amount for this pay period from an official worksheet or genuine payroll record to include it; leave it blank to see pay before state withholding. You can enter a known local withholding amount separately. Alabama withholding is never calculated on this page: it appears only when you supply a per-period amount from payroll or the Department of Revenue's employer instructions, and any city or county deduction has to go in the separate local box. This calculator is an estimate workspace, not a payroll filing service. Verify every assumption with current official instructions.
Where the Alabama withholding figure comes from
Alabama income tax is withheld from wages, and this page does not work it out. Employers take the amount from the Department of Revenue's Withholding Tax Tables and Instructions for Employers and Withholding Agents, applied to the exemption status the worker claimed on Form A-4 and to where the pay falls in the state's graduated schedule. The optional Alabama field here is for that amount and nothing else: copy it from a genuine pay record covering one pay period, or work it out from the department's own instructions. Leave it empty and the figure on the right is pay before Alabama withholding, not take-home pay.
Keeping the Alabama field and the local field apart
A city or county deduction is not Alabama income tax, and the two must never land in the same field. If your stub shows one, put it in the local field on its own, because each optional amount you type is taken off the gross figure separately and the same money entered twice disappears twice. Match what you enter to one pay period of the length selected above, not a running total for the year so far, which covers periods already paid rather than the one on screen. Then check both figures against a statement payroll issued rather than against another estimate.
Frequently asked questions
Does this calculator include Alabama withholding automatically?
No. It works out federal income tax and FICA for the period you describe, then stops. The Alabama field is yours to fill: nothing is assumed for it, and while it is empty the total on the right is explicitly described as pay before Alabama tax has been taken off, not as take-home. An amount you type is shown as your own entry, sourced from payroll or from the department's employer instructions, rather than as a figure this page derived.
I have no pay stub — where does the Alabama figure come from?
From the Department of Revenue's published tables and instructions for employers and withholding agents, applied for a single payroll period to the exemption status on your Form A-4. There is no fixed share of gross pay to use instead, because the state schedule steps up through several percentages as income rises and pre-tax deductions change the wages the tables are read against. If you cannot get a dependable figure, leave the field blank and read the result as pay before Alabama tax.
