Indiana Paycheck Calculator
Work out Indiana take-home pay from gross, pay frequency, filing status and pre-tax deductions. Federal and FICA are estimated for you; enter the IN...
Estimate pay before Indiana state and local withholding, then enter the amount from current official state guidance.
Indiana state withholding is not calculated automatically. Enter the amount for this pay period from an official worksheet or genuine payroll record to include it; leave it blank to see pay before state withholding. You can enter a known local withholding amount separately. This estimate covers federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare only; the Indiana state and county amounts are included solely if you enter them, and nothing here is checked against your employer's payroll. This calculator is an estimate workspace, not a payroll filing service. Verify every assumption with current official instructions.
Departmental Notice #1 does the work this page cannot
An Indiana employer does not read a rate off a chart and multiply. It works from Departmental Notice #1, How to Compute Withholding for State and County Income Tax, which carries a tax rate for every county alongside deduction constant tables. Those tables divide the exemptions an employee claims on Form WH-4 by the number of pay periods, and the constant that falls out is taken from gross income before any tax is figured. The notice adds that for a one-time or non-periodic payment, such as a bonus check, withholding is computed without exemptions at all. This page runs none of that. It estimates federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare, and leaves the Indiana amounts to you.
Where each Indiana amount goes on this page
There is a box marked IN state withholding and a separate one marked Local withholding. The state income tax figure belongs in the first and the county figure in the second, each covering the single pay period you are estimating, copied from a genuine pay record or worked out from Departmental Notice #1. Leave either empty and the heading changes to say the total is pay before that withholding, rather than showing a zero that would read as an answer. Whatever you type is accepted as typed: the page subtracts it, and does not check it against your employer's payroll or against the notice.
Frequently asked questions
Why doesn't this calculator work out Indiana state and county tax for me?
Because Departmental Notice #1 does not have an employer apply a rate straight to gross pay. Exemption constants drawn from your Form WH-4 and divided across your pay periods come out of gross income first, and for a one-time payment such as a bonus the notice drops those exemptions entirely. A generic engine would produce a confident, wrong figure. This page shows the federal, Social Security and Medicare lines it can stand behind and asks you for the two Indiana amounts.
Where do I find the county amount to enter?
If you have a recent Indiana pay record, look for a separate county line and copy the figure covering one pay period. Otherwise, Departmental Notice #1 carries a tax rate for each Indiana county and tells a withholding agent which county's rate to apply. The notice also states that an employer is not required to withhold state or county income tax on some employees if the employee will work in Indiana thirty days or less during the taxable year.
