Iowa Paycheck Calculator

Work out Iowa take-home pay from gross, pay frequency, filing status and pre-tax deductions. Federal and FICA are estimated for you; enter the IA...

Estimate pay before Iowa state and local withholding, then enter the amount from current official state guidance.

Iowa state withholding is not calculated automatically. Enter the amount for this pay period from an official worksheet or genuine payroll record to include it; leave it blank to see pay before state withholding. You can enter a known local withholding amount separately. The estimate applies configured 2026 federal assumptions and subtracts an Iowa amount only when you supply one, and it makes no allowance for the school district or county emergency medical services surtaxes, which are settled on the annual Iowa return rather than withheld payday by payday. This calculator is an estimate workspace, not a payroll filing service. Verify every assumption with current official instructions.

What Goes in the Iowa Box

Iowa withholding is not worked out for you here. The number that belongs in the Iowa box is driven by the Iowa W-4, form 44-019, the Employee Exemption Certificate that each new hire and rehire must complete and sign within fifteen days of starting, and by the current withholding formula the state publishes for employers. Take the figure from a genuine pay record covering the same pay period, or compute it against that formula, then type it in. Leaving the box empty is not an assertion that nothing is withheld. It produces a figure that is pay before any Iowa tax, so it reads high.

The Iowa Surtaxes No Payday Carries

Iowa has income surtaxes that are settled on the annual return rather than deducted each payday: the school district surtax, and the county emergency medical services surtax in Appanoose, Cass, Pocahontas, Sac, Shelby and Winnebago. Both sit on the line that follows the tax calculation on the Iowa 1040, so no paycheck estimate can anticipate them and the local withholding box has nothing to hold on their account. If a real Iowa stub does show a separate local deduction, enter that amount in the local box for the same pay period and nowhere else. Repeating it under other deductions would subtract it twice.

Frequently asked questions

Does leaving the Iowa withholding box blank mean nothing is taken out?

No. Blank means the amount is unknown and excluded, so what you see is pay before Iowa withholding rather than a claim that none is due. Iowa employers withhold against the state formula and the Iowa W-4 on file. Enter zero only when a genuine record for that pay period shows no Iowa tax was taken. Otherwise copy the Iowa amount from that record so the estimate accounts for it.

Will this estimate line up with what I owe Iowa at filing time?

It cannot. Even with an Iowa withholding amount entered, this covers one pay period. The annual Iowa return adds the school district surtax and, in the six counties that levy it, the county emergency medical services surtax, on the line following the tax calculation, and neither is withheld from individual paychecks. Credits and other filing details also appear only on the return. Use the Department of Revenue instructions for the annual figure.
