Rhode Island Paycheck Calculator

Work out Rhode Island take-home pay from gross, pay frequency, filing status and pre-tax deductions. Federal and FICA are estimated for you; enter the RI...

Estimate pay before Rhode Island state and local withholding, then enter the amount from current official state guidance.

Rhode Island state withholding is not calculated automatically. Enter the amount for this pay period from an official worksheet or genuine payroll record to include it; leave it blank to see pay before state withholding. You can enter a known local withholding amount separately. Federal withholding and FICA are estimated from your entries, while Rhode Island income tax withholding and the employee-funded Temporary Disability Insurance deduction are included only when you type them in from a pay statement or the Division of Taxation's current tables. This calculator is an estimate workspace, not a payroll filing service. Verify every assumption with current official instructions.

Two Employee Deductions, Neither One Computed

A Rhode Island paycheck can carry two state deductions, and this page calculates neither. The first is income tax withholding. The second is Temporary Disability Insurance, financed entirely out of employee payroll deductions and administered by the Temporary Disability Insurance Division of the Department of Labor and Training; the same contribution also funds Temporary Caregiver Insurance. Workers aged fourteen and fifteen are exempt from the deduction and from coverage, so a young worker's statement will not show it. Add whichever lines apply, for the same pay period, into the state field, or leave it blank and read the total as pay before state deductions.

The RI W-4 and the Payroll-Period Tables

Federal Form W-4 can no longer stand in for Rhode Island. Employers must obtain Form RI W-4 in addition to the federal certificate, keep it on file, and use it when figuring the state amount. The Division of Taxation's employer withholding tables are then laid out by payroll period: weekly, bi-weekly, semimonthly, monthly, and daily or miscellaneous. This page collects one filing status and one frequency, and state exemptions are never entered. If you choose a frequency the state booklet does not list, there is no matching table row to copy, so work from a genuine pay statement instead.

Frequently asked questions

Does the estimate include the Temporary Disability Insurance deduction?

No. Nothing on this page calculates it. It is an employee-funded payroll deduction collected for the Department of Labor and Training, covering both temporary disability and temporary caregiver benefits, and it appears on your statement as its own line. If yours shows it, add it to the state figure you enter for the same pay period so the take-home line accounts for it. If yours does not, the estimate is not wrong on that account.

Which form actually drives my Rhode Island withholding?

Form RI W-4, held by your employer. The Division of Taxation no longer lets the federal W-4 serve as the state certificate, which is why employers require both. If you want the state amount changed, file a new RI W-4; this page cannot change it, because it never asks for state exemptions. Then compare the withholding on your next statement against the division's current table for your payroll period rather than against this estimate.
