Estimate pay before West Virginia state and local withholding, then enter the amount from current official state guidance.
West Virginia state withholding is not calculated automatically. Enter the amount for this pay period from an official worksheet or genuine payroll record to include it; leave it blank to see pay before state withholding. You can enter a known local withholding amount separately. This estimate covers federal withholding and FICA only: West Virginia tax enters it solely as an amount you supply from IT-100.2.A, IT-100.2.B or a real pay record, and nothing local is included unless you type it. This calculator is an estimate workspace, not a payroll filing service. Verify every assumption with current official instructions.
What the West Virginia estimate leaves blank
This page estimates the federal lines and FICA for a single pay period. It does not work out West Virginia withholding. The West Virginia Tax Division publishes two employer methods, IT-100.2.A for the percentage method and IT-100.2.B for the table method, and what either one produces also depends on the worker's own Form IT-104 and on the elections IT-104.1 covers, including the low-income earned income exclusion and out-of-state withholding. None of that lives in the tool. Type the West Virginia amount from a genuine pay record or from one of those methods; leave the box empty and the headline figure is pay before West Virginia withholding.
Checking a West Virginia amount before you trust it
Use an amount covering the same pay period you selected above, never a year-to-date total, and enter it again after changing the pay frequency, because that selection clears the state and local boxes on purpose. How often an employer reports, on Form IT-101Q each quarter or Form IT-101A once a year, changes nothing about what leaves a single check, so reporting cadence is no guide to the per-period figure. TSD 381, the Tax Division's withholding information for employers, is where the current employer rules sit. Leave the local box empty unless your own pay record shows a local deduction.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the West Virginia line stay empty until I type something?
Because no shortcut reproduces what the percentage method, the table method and the elections on Form IT-104 produce together, and an invented figure would look authoritative while being wrong. Until you supply an amount the deduction list marks that line as not included, and the headline is labelled pay before West Virginia and local withholding rather than take-home. Enter a real figure and the same line switches to an amount you supplied.
Which West Virginia figure belongs in the box?
The state income tax withheld for one pay period of the length selected here, copied from a genuine pay stub or worked out with IT-100.2.A or IT-100.2.B. Do not enter a year-to-date total, and do not fold a local amount into the same box, because each box is subtracted once. If you switch between weekly, twice a month and monthly, supply the figure again for the new period length.
