What an Alaska Statement of Earnings Must Show

Regulation 8 AAC 15.160(h) sets out a long, specific list. Each pay period the employer must hand over a written or electronic statement of earnings and deductions showing the rate of pay, gross wages, net wages, the beginning and ending dates of the pay period, federal income tax and Federal Insurance Contribution Act deductions, Alaska Employment Security Act contributions, board or lodging deductions, advances, straight time and overtime hours actually worked, and any other authorized deductions. Sick leave used during the accrual year and the remaining sick leave balance belong on that same statement. The Labor Standards and Safety Division of the Department of Labor and Workforce Development handles wage complaints.

No Income Tax Line, but an Employment Security One

The state revenue department's tax division is blunt about it: there is currently no individual income tax here, so no employee withholding for state income tax is required. That does not leave the state column empty. Unemployment insurance is not carried by the employer alone, because the Employment Security Tax section publishes a total contribution built from an employer rate plus a separate employee rate, and the employee portion comes out of wages. That is why the required earnings statement gives Alaska Employment Security Act contributions their own line, sitting alongside federal income tax and FICA rather than replacing them.

Frequently asked questions

When is a final paycheck due after a job ends in Alaska?

AS 23.05.140(b) makes everything owed due immediately once employment ends, then sets the deadline. If the employer ends the job, for any reason, payment is due within three working days of the termination. If the worker resigns, payment is due on the next regular pay day that falls at least three days after the employer received notice. The same section lets the employee elect monthly or semi-monthly pay periods.

Why does sick leave appear on an Alaska statement of earnings?

Because the earnings-statement regulation now lists it. Under 8 AAC 15.160(h) the statement must carry both the sick leave used during the accrual year and the remaining balance, in the same place as gross wages and deductions. A draft built here can reproduce those figures from your own records, but it is not the employer's statement and confirms no leave balance. Check it against what payroll issued.

Is a generated draft an employer-issued pay statement in Alaska?

No. A generated draft can help organize genuine payroll information, but it does not verify employment or income and does not replace a statement issued by an employer or payroll provider.

Where should I verify Alaska payroll deductions?

Check the current instructions from the IRS and the relevant Alaska tax and labor agencies. The calculator provides estimates from the information entered; local taxes, special programs, filing status, and payroll circumstances can change the result.

What records should an independent contractor keep in Alaska?

Keep invoices, contracts, platform payout statements, bank records, expense records, and Forms 1099 when applicable. A personal earnings draft can support reconciliation, but it should not be presented as an employer-issued pay statement.
