Hawaii Paycheck Calculator

Work out Hawaii take-home pay from gross, pay frequency, filing status and pre-tax deductions. Federal and FICA are estimated for you; enter the HI...

Estimate pay before Hawaii state and local withholding, then enter the amount from current official state guidance.

Hawaii state withholding is not calculated automatically. Enter the amount for this pay period from an official worksheet or genuine payroll record to include it; leave it blank to see pay before state withholding. You can enter a known local withholding amount separately. The result is a federal estimate with FICA; Hawaii income tax withholding is added only when you enter it from a pay statement or Booklet A, and temporary disability or prepaid health-plan premium shares are excluded unless you add them as other deductions. This calculator is an estimate workspace, not a payroll filing service. Verify every assumption with current official instructions.

Head of Household Is Not a Hawaii Withholding Status

Choosing head of household on this page changes the federal figure only. For Hawaii withholding, the Department of Taxation treats that filer as single and offers an additional allowance on the certificate instead of a status of its own. Form HW-4 is an allowance and status certificate, and its worksheet runs well past anything collected here: a line for yourself, one for a spouse who is claiming no allowance of their own, one for each dependent, another if you or your spouse has reached the age the form sets, and further lines for itemizers or for credits you expect. Hawaii law allows no exempt status at all, unlike the federal certificate.

What to Copy From the Statement, and Where to Put It

The Hawaii amount is not calculated here. Booklet A, the Employer's Tax Guide from the Department of Taxation, carries the withholding methods and tables your employer actually works from, together with its section on what is not subject to withholding. Read the state line off a real pay statement covering the same period and enter it, or leave the field blank and treat the headline number as pay before Hawaii withholding. Amounts taken under a court order, or ones you authorized in writing, are separate again: put those under other deductions, or the estimate will treat them as state tax.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't my Hawaii withholding match the filing status I chose?

Because the status is not what sets the state amount. On Form HW-4 the number that moves your withholding is the allowance total carried down from the worksheet, together with any flat amount you asked to have added each pay period. This page collects neither, and it never sees the certificate your employer keeps on file, so it cannot reproduce the state figure however you set the status here. Compare against a real pay statement, and change the amount by filing a fresh HW-4.

Can I mark myself exempt from Hawaii withholding in this estimate?

No, and the state does not offer that either. The HW-4 instructions state that Hawaii law does not allow exempt status for withholding purposes, so a federal exemption has no state counterpart. If you think too much is coming out, file a corrected HW-4 with your employer showing the right allowance count. Booklet A's section on what is not subject to withholding covers the narrow cases that fall outside the rules, including certified disabled persons.
