Hawaii's TDI and Prepaid Health Care Deductions
Two state programs put their own lines on a statement here. Temporary Disability Insurance, administered by the Disability Compensation Division, covers non-work injury or illness; an employer may require a worker to share the premium cost but can charge no more than half of it, and can deduct nothing at all from a worker who is not eligible for benefits. Prepaid health care is the second. After four consecutive weeks of employment at twenty or more hours a week you may enrol in your employer's plan, which the labor department has to approve, and where you share the premium the employer pays the balance. Income tax is separate, withheld under Department of Taxation rules from your Form HW-4; with no HW-4 on file, the employer withholds as single with zero exemptions.
Frequently asked questions
What can a Hawaii employer not deduct from my wages?
The labor department's official notice lists what is off limits: fines, such as a charge for being tardy; cash shortages in a register or box shared by two or more people; penalties or replacement costs for breakage; losses from checks you were authorized to accept that were later dishonored; and losses from faulty workmanship, lost or stolen property, damage, or customers not paying, unless you willfully disregarded the employer's interest. Your employer may deduct taxes, court-ordered amounts, and what you authorized in writing.
When must a Hawaii employer pay my final wages?
It depends on how the job ended. If you are discharged, wages are due in full at the time of discharge, or no later than the next working day. If you quit or resign, payment is due no later than the next regular payday, but if you gave your employer one pay period's notice of your intention to quit, you must be paid on your last day of employment. Unpaid wage complaints go to the Wage Standards Division within one year.
Is a generated draft an employer-issued pay statement in Hawaii?
No. A generated draft can help organize genuine payroll information, but it does not verify employment or income and does not replace a statement issued by an employer or payroll provider.
Where should I verify Hawaii payroll deductions?
Check the current instructions from the IRS and the relevant Hawaii tax and labor agencies. The calculator provides estimates from the information entered; local taxes, special programs, filing status, and payroll circumstances can change the result.
What records should an independent contractor keep in Hawaii?
Keep invoices, contracts, platform payout statements, bank records, expense records, and Forms 1099 when applicable. A personal earnings draft can support reconciliation, but it should not be presented as an employer-issued pay statement.
