Montana Paycheck Calculator

Work out Montana take-home pay from gross, pay frequency, filing status and pre-tax deductions. Federal and FICA are estimated for you; enter the MT...

Estimate pay before Montana state and local withholding, then enter the amount from current official state guidance.

Montana state withholding is not calculated automatically. Enter the amount for this pay period from an official worksheet or genuine payroll record to include it; leave it blank to see pay before state withholding. You can enter a known local withholding amount separately. This estimate covers federal income tax withholding, Social Security and Medicare from what you enter; the Montana amount appears only if you supply it, and no local income tax line applies in Montana. This calculator is an estimate workspace, not a payroll filing service. Verify every assumption with current official instructions.

Where the Montana line on this estimate comes from

The workspace does the federal arithmetic only: income tax withholding from the gross figure, the pay frequency and the filing status you enter, together with Social Security up to its annual wage cap and Medicare, including the higher tier that begins once earnings pass the statutory threshold. Montana is left to you. The state sorts wages into brackets instead of applying one rate across the board, and the employer's figure depends on what the worker put on Form MW-4, the certificate the Department of Revenue issues for Montana withholding. The state box therefore takes a number lifted from the department's worksheet or from a real pay record covering the same period. With the box empty, what you see is pay that has not yet had Montana tax taken out.

Two Montana checks the estimate cannot make for you

There is no local income tax in Montana, so the local field stays at nothing unless a genuine pay record shows an amount and says what it is. Unemployment insurance does not belong in a withholding field either. Employer contributions fund it here, and the Unemployment Insurance Division's employer handbook treats a UI charge against a worker's pay as unlawful, so a stub showing one is a question for the payroll office rather than a figure to reproduce. Remember too that the workspace begins from a gross amount you type rather than from hours and a rate, so overtime and every other addition to earnings must already sit inside that number.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the Montana withholding field empty until I fill it in?

Because the workspace does not run Montana's method. The Department of Revenue publishes that method and Form MW-4, and the amount turns on which brackets the wages fall into, on what the employee entered on the certificate, and on how often pay is issued. Guessing is worse than leaving it out, so the field waits for a figure you copy from the official worksheet or from a pay record for the same period. Empty, it is listed as not included.

Can I put a monthly Montana amount into a weekly estimate?

No. Every figure in the workspace belongs to a single pay period, so a monthly amount dropped into a weekly estimate multiplies the deduction several times over. Changing the frequency clears any amount you supplied, deliberately so. If no pay period was ever established for your job, Montana law fills that gap with a semimonthly one, and that is the period to model and the period your withholding figure should cover.
