Estimate pay before Nebraska state and local withholding, then enter the amount from current official state guidance.
Nebraska state withholding is not calculated automatically. Enter the amount for this pay period from an official worksheet or genuine payroll record to include it; leave it blank to see pay before state withholding. You can enter a known local withholding amount separately. The estimate covers federal withholding, Social Security and Medicare only; the Nebraska income tax line is whatever you enter for that pay period, and Nebraska unemployment insurance never belongs there because employees pay none of it. This calculator is an estimate workspace, not a payroll filing service. Verify every assumption with current official instructions.
What the Nebraska estimate actually computes
Type a gross amount for one pay period, choose how often it is paid, and the workspace estimates the federal side: income tax withholding, Social Security up to the annual wage cap, and Medicare with its additional tier above the statutory threshold. The year-to-date field is what tells it whether that cap has already been reached. Nebraska sits outside the calculation. Its wage tax climbs through a series of brackets, and employers read the amount from the Department of Revenue's Circular EN, so the state box takes a figure copied from that method or from a pay record covering the same period. Leave it empty and the total is pay before any Nebraska tax comes out.
Before you trust a Nebraska figure
The filing status in this workspace feeds the federal estimate only. Nebraska adds a second certificate, Form W-4N, which an employer collects alongside each federal W-4 it takes in, so a state amount that merely copies the federal deduction deserves a second look against payroll. Unemployment insurance is funded entirely by a tax on employers here, with nothing taken from employee paychecks, so no UI figure belongs in either withholding field. Confirm the frequency as well: a Nebraska employer owes at least thirty days' written notice before moving the regular payday.
Frequently asked questions
Does the calculator use my Nebraska Form W-4N?
No. It reads nothing about you and works only from what you type, and the filing status offered is the federal one. On a real Nebraska paycheck the state withholding follows what was entered on the W-4N together with the withholding method the Department of Revenue publishes for employers. To reflect that here, copy the Nebraska amount from your pay record or the official worksheet into the state field.
Should a Nebraska unemployment insurance deduction go in the state field?
No. Nebraska's unemployment insurance is funded solely by an employer tax, with no deduction taken from employee paychecks for it, so there is no employee UI amount to enter. The state field takes Nebraska income tax withholding for the pay period and nothing else. If a Nebraska pay record shows a UI deduction, ask your employer to explain it rather than copying the figure into this estimate.
