Nebraska Withholding and the W-4N
The state runs a withholding certificate of its own. For every federal Form W-4 an employer receives, a Nebraska Form W-4N has to be completed as well, and the Department of Revenue built it because Nebraska's standard deduction differs from the federal one and because personal exemption credits are allowed on the Nebraska return. Employers work from the Nebraska Circular EN, which carries the percentage method and separate tables for weekly, biweekly, semimonthly, monthly and daily payroll periods, so the figure withheld turns on the size of your wages and how often you are paid. An employer who does not obtain the W-4N must withhold as if you were single, with no allowances.
Frequently asked questions
What has to be on a Nebraska pay stub?
Section 48-1230 sets a short floor: who the employer is, the hours you were paid for, the wages you earned, and the deductions taken. The statement has to reach you on each regular payday, by mail, electronically, or at your workplace during working hours for every shift. Employers covered by the Healthy Families and Workplaces Act must also show, on the check or an attachment, the paid sick time available to you, the amount taken, and the pay you received for it.
When must a Nebraska employer pay final wages?
Final wages are due on the next regular payday or within two weeks of the separation, whichever comes sooner. Wages count as unpaid once they run thirty days past the designated payday. If your employer misses the deadline, the Wage Payment and Collection Act lets you pursue the amount, and the Nebraska Department of Labor accepts a wage complaint. Hold on to the wage statements you were given — they are the record of hours and deductions any claim will turn on.
Is a generated draft an employer-issued pay statement in Nebraska?
No. A generated draft can help organize genuine payroll information, but it does not verify employment or income and does not replace a statement issued by an employer or payroll provider.
Where should I verify Nebraska payroll deductions?
Check the current instructions from the IRS and the relevant Nebraska tax and labor agencies. The calculator provides estimates from the information entered; local taxes, special programs, filing status, and payroll circumstances can change the result.
What records should an independent contractor keep in Nebraska?
Keep invoices, contracts, platform payout statements, bank records, expense records, and Forms 1099 when applicable. A personal earnings draft can support reconciliation, but it should not be presented as an employer-issued pay statement.
