Utah Paycheck Calculator

Work out Utah take-home pay from gross, pay frequency, filing status and pre-tax deductions. Federal and FICA are estimated for you; enter the UT...

Estimate pay before Utah state and local withholding, then enter the amount from current official state guidance.

Utah state withholding is not calculated automatically. Enter the amount for this pay period from an official worksheet or genuine payroll record to include it; leave it blank to see pay before state withholding. You can enter a known local withholding amount separately. Federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare are estimated from what you enter; the Utah amount appears only if you supply it from Publication 14 or a real pay record, and this page is not a payroll calculation. This calculator is an estimate workspace, not a payroll filing service. Verify every assumption with current official instructions.

One rate, and still not a multiplication you can do

Utah applies a single income tax rate rather than a ladder of brackets, which makes the state line look like something you could work out with a calculator app. It isn't. Employers use the State Tax Commission's Publication 14, the Withholding Tax Guide, whose schedules and tables produce the figure, and they work from the employee's federal Form W-4 together with those schedules. Utah withholding is computed on wages subject to federal withholding, with no subtraction for the personal or other allowances claimed on that federal form. Multiplying gross pay by the rate does not reproduce it, so this page does not try.

Filling the Utah box honestly

Take the amount from the Utah line of a pay statement covering one period, or from the Publication 14 schedule that matches your payroll period, and put it in the box marked UT state withholding. The page subtracts what you enter and validates none of it. Leave it empty and the heading stops calling the result take-home pay and says it is pay before Utah withholding. One knock-on effect is worth knowing: Utah's computation starts from wages subject to federal withholding, so a pre-tax amount that lowers your federal taxable wages lowers the Utah base too, and the figure you entered goes stale.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the Utah withholding box empty until I fill it in?

Because this page has no Utah engine in it. The amount comes out of the State Tax Commission's Publication 14 schedules, applied to wages subject to federal withholding and driven by the federal Form W-4 your employer holds, not from a percentage a generic calculator could apply to your gross. Rather than print a plausible number, the estimate leaves Utah out and labels the result as pay before Utah withholding.

Which form drives my Utah withholding?

The federal one. The State Tax Commission's guidance has employers withhold using the employee's federal Form W-4 alongside the Utah withholding schedules and tables in Publication 14, and Utah withholding is figured on wages subject to federal withholding without subtracting the allowances claimed on that form. So if your Utah line looks wrong on a real stub, the W-4 on file with payroll is the first thing to check, not this page.
